In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
