Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
